Information on Drinking Water Violations

EPA has just released updated violations statistics for 2001. The statistics include chemical monitoring violations that were extracted from the SDWIS database. http://www.epa.gov/safewater/data/getdata.html

Method 8265 Published*

EPA's Office of Solid Waste has released a method that uses direct sampling ion trap mass spectrometry (DSITMS) for the continuous real-time monitoring of volatile organics. http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/test/news.htm

Guidance on SDWA Lead and Copper Rule*

EPA has released a guidance document that provides a discussion of the monitoring and reporting requirements of this rule. http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lcrmr/finalmonitoringguidance.pdf

Agenda for National Site Assessment Conference Available*

The conference, to be held in Austin on May 13-15, is focused on approaches in hazardous waste cleanup that affect site assessment including: managing contaminated sediment characterizing background chemicals, the relative importance of sampling and analytical error on site uncertainty and decision making and how field methods and dynamic field strategy can be used. http://www.epa.gov/superfund/programs/siteasmt/sa_conf/agenda.htm

Decreasing Uncertainty in the Identification of Chemicals Based on Their Literature Citation

General citation of a chemical compound in the literature is assumed to be related to the probability of its being contained in a sample as the citation measures abundance and popularity of the compound. This method was validated by counting citations for detected impurities in pure n-hexane and naphthalene, and PAH in waste gas, as compared with counts for similar or dissimilar compounds that are absent in the samples. Paint Production Waste RCRA Listing Decision*

EPA has decided to not list as hazardous certain wastes generated from the production of paint. EPA is also not including constituents in these wastes (n-butyl alcohol, ethyl benzene, methyl isobutyl ketone, styrene, and xylenes) as new Appendix VIII constituents. The wastes remain subject to a determination on whether or not they exhibit any of the hazardous waste characteristics. (4/4/02; 67 FR 16261)
